Is Your Skin Care Product Really Organic?

Organic can mean many different things to many different people. Sometimes, manufacturers may take advantage of this confusion to label products "organic" that might not be entirely natural or organic. The best way to be sure that you are using truly organic products is to know what to look for on the label and how to spot telltale signs that indicate that a product is not really made with organic ingredients.

First - Look for petroleum based ingredients. The label "organic" means that a product contains 95 percent ingredients that are carbon-based. This means that if a product has petroleum or petroleum-based ingredients in high volumes, it can be labeled organic. Generally these products do not fit what most people are looking for when they start searching for organic products.

Second - Think about what you want. When some people think "organic," they think of herbal ingredients. Others want fruit and plant extracts and compounds. These things are not in many "organic" products, so you need to define organic for yourself before you start reading to make sure that you are looking for the right things.

Third - Keep an eye out for derivatives. A derivative can still be considered natural if it comes from a natural source. This means that cocamide-DEA, a chemically derived compound that originates with coconut oil, might be considered organic or natural. However, it actually can only be created using an extensive chemical process so you may not want it in your beauty routine if you are focused on using exclusively organic products.

Fourth - Compare water content. Water is organic inherently. However, if the main ingredient in a product is water and the product is 89 percent organic, then most of that organic percentage is likely from water rather than other organic elements. This is okay, but you will have more success with products that have ingredients other than water in them!
